FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does FileMagnet allow viewing of iWork (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) files on the phone? Yes. You should make sure you've updated both FileMagnet on your iPhone and the Mac FileMagnet Uploader to v1.0.1. iWork files uploaded with v1.0 will have to be re-uploaded to be viewable.

What are the system requirements for running FileMagnet? FileMagnet requires an iPhone or iPod touch running the 2.0 firmware and a Mac running MacOS X 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard. The iPhone must be connected to the same network as the Mac via Wi-Fi.

How does FileMagnet connect to my computer? Instead of connecting over USB, FileMagnet uses your WiFi network to connect between your Mac and iPhone. It uses Apple's Bonjour zero-configuration networking, making wireless connections easy. Even if there is no outside WiFi network to connect to, you can create your own wireless network directly between your Mac and iPhone.

How do I copy files from my computer to my phone? You run a Mac program called FileMagnet Uploader, which is a free download. You drag files onto the Uploader application, launch the phone application and the files are automatically copied over.

Can I email files from FileMagnet? Not yet, but we're working on it! The iPhone version of Mail doesn't support sending attachments, so this will require a bit of work.

Is there a Windows version of the Uploader? No. FileMagnet is currently Mac only, and requires OS X 10.4 Tiger or higher. We are researching the development of a Windows version of the Uploader.

What files can I view on the iPhone using FileMagnet? You can view the following filetypes on the iPhone: PDF, Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), iWork (Pages, Keynote, Numbers), JPEG, GIF, TIF, PNG, HTML, RTF, TXT, Safari WebArchives, iPhone compatible movies and audio files.

Can FileMagnet support viewing files in landscape (90 degree rotated) mode? Yes, just turn your iPhone sideways to rotate the display.

Why can't I view Excel files in FileMagnet? Make sure you've updated to the latest version of FileMagnet.

Can FileMagnet store any kind of file? Yes, you can use FileMagnet to store any kind of file. You can even transfer whole folders. Still, only certain file types will allow you to view their contents on the phone. (See "What files can I view on the iPhone using FileMagnet?" for details)

Will updates be made available for free? Yes, updates are going to be free.

What is the PDF viewing experience like in FileMagnet? Viewing a PDF in FileMagnet is very similar to viewing a PDF in Mail on the iPhone.

Does the iPhone have to be connected over WiFi to the same network as the Mac? Is this the only way to transfer files? Yes. To discover each other, both devices must be connected to the same Bonjour-enabled WiFi network. If you need to, you can create your own wireless network between your Mac and iPhone. To do this, on your Mac select the "Create Network" option in the AirPort menu. Then, select this WiFi network on the iPhone.

Can files be transferred from the iPhone back to the Mac? Yes. In the Mac application, you'll see a list of the files stored on the connected iPhone. There will be a download button next to each one. Click the arrow button to download files from the phone onto the Mac.

How can I make folders in FileMagnet? You can send an entire folder to the iPhone by dragging it into the Mac app. There isn't currently an interface to rearrange files that are already on the phone, though we're working on it.

My iPhone or iPod Touch goes back to the home screen after a few seconds when I try FileMagnet. What should I do? This is a known bug in the iPhone 2.0 software. You need to reboot your iPhone or iPod Touch. To do this, hold down the little power button for 10 seconds until you're prompted to "slide to power off". Power off, then restart by pressing the power button for a second again. FileMagnet should then behave normally.

My PDF is too tiny! How do I zoom in? You can zoom in on files in FileMagnet by placing two fingers on the screen and moving them apart. To zoom out, move the two fingers together (pinch) on the screen.

When I view a PDF, I get a message that "FileMagnet is running out of memory". What can I do? If you see the "FileMagnet is running out of memory" message, you should try rebooting your iPhone and trying again to view the file. To reboot the iPhone, hold down the little power button for 10 seconds until you're prompted to "slide to power off". Slide, and then once it shuts down, restart it by pressing the power button for a second again. If you still receive the message, it's likely that the file you're trying to view is simply too large or complex for FileMagnet. We're working to allow viewing of larger files in future updates.
